Two dead from toxic fume inhalation on MOL cargo ship

Two cargo ship crewmembers have died after they reportedly inhaled toxic fumes while on board their vessel.

The incident occurred shortly after the Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) wood chip carrier Green World arrived at Merak Port in Java, Indonesia, on the morning of Friday, February 1, to unload its cargo.

Two of the vessel’s deck crew lost consciousness at around 05:00 local time as they opened one of the cargo hold hatches.

The two crewmembers were said to have inhaled toxic fumes that had emanated from the cargo hold.

The victims were immediately rushed to hospital but were later pronounced dead.

Local authorities are currently investigating the incident.
