Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted approval in principle (AIP) to Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC) and MAN Energy Solutions for an ammonia-fuelled ultra-large containership (ULCS) concept design.

Bjarne Foldager, Senior Vice President, Head of Two-Stroke Business at MAN Energy Solutions said that ammonia is a viable alternative marine fuel as it has the potential in the future to be created from renewable, primary-energy sources such as wind, hydro, or solar.

The 23,000TEU vessel will be the first ammonia-fuelled containership to be designed and built in China.
