Hapag-Lloyd is set to retrofit the 15,000TEU containership Sajir to enable its engine system to operate using either LNG or low-sulphur fuel oil (LSFO).

The contract for the retrofitting was signed with Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding while conversion will be carried out at Huarun Dadong Dockyard in Shanghai.

Sajir’s fuel system and existing heavy fuel oil (HFO) burning engine will be converted into a dual fuel engine. Hapag-Lloyd will operate the vessel primarily using LNG with LSFO as a backup.

Sixteen other ships in the Hapag-Lloyd fleet are scheduled to undergo similar retrofitting in future.
