ABS, DSME to collaborate on digitalisation, decarbonisation on future commercial ship newbuildings

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) have entered into a joint development project (JDP) agreement to explore decarbonisation and digitalisation strategies for the South Korean shipyard’s future very large crude carrier (VLCC) and ultra large containership (ULCS) newbuilding programmes.

The JDP aims for DSME to develop ABS-approved VLCC and ULCS vessel designs which will comply with IMO 2030 decarbonisation goals.

The JDP also covers onshore remote monitoring, SMART and autonomy technology, as well as development and review of cyber security aspects associated with DSME’s smart ship platform.
