Over 130 injured in containership fire in Laem Chabang, Thailand

More than 130 people were rushed to hospital after a fire broke out on a berthed containership in Thailand’s Chonburi province on Saturday, May 25.

The incident at the port of Laem Chabang occurred at 06:35 local time when a blaze erupted among the containers on board the South Korean-flagged vessel KMTC Hongkong.

The fire lasted through to the early afternoon and left many passengers feeling a burning sensation on the skin as well as irritated eyes and throats though no major injuries have been reported.

A preliminary investigation revealed the fire originated in a container with a cargo of calcium hypochlorite, a port official said.
