Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding completes sea trials of new 20,000TEU COSCO container ship

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding completed the seven-day sea trials of a new 20,000TEU container ship built for China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO) on September 7.

The ship is the third 20,000TEU ship delivered by Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding to COSCO this year.

The ship reached 22.66 knots during speed tests, exceeding the 22.5-knot speed requirement for the design of this type of ship.

The vessel incorporates an intelligent ship energy efficiency management system, which can automatically determine optimal berthing, manoeuvring, and fixed speed navigation.

The ship’s energy consumption can be monitored in real time, as can the distribution of both output static and dynamic energy to ensure efficient energy utilisation. The system will automatically activate an alarm if the energy consumption indicator readout exceeds a set limit.

The system will also automatically upload ship status data to the Marorka Online database whether in manual or automatic mode.

The ship will undergo final commissioning work and is expected to be named and delivered in mid-October.
