Spanish Navy selects anti-missile defence systems for installation on surface ships

The Spanish Navy and MBDA has entered into a framework agreement for the supply of three SIMBAD RC anti-missile systems, which MBDA said is a capability the service does not currently possess.

The systems will be integrated into active naval units as part of the Spanish Ministry of Defence and the Spanish Navy's plan to strengthen the fleet's self-defence capabilities against missile and aerial threats.

MBDA said the incorporation of SIMBAD RC systems will enhance the Spanish Navy's operational capacity by improving vessel protection.

SIMBAD-RC is an anti-missile and anti-aircraft self-defence system based on MBDA's Mistral missile.

MBDA said the system will be capable of providing vessels with primary self-defence capabilities or acting as a complementary layer to their main defence systems.

The system will offer effective defence capabilities against threats such as anti-ship missiles, sea-skimming missiles, manned aircraft, and drones.

It can be controlled by a single operator, simplifying operation and providing 24/7 operational capability in all weather conditions, according to MBDA.

The SIMBAD-RC systems have also been installed on the Philippine Navy's two Jose Rizal-class frigates.
