The San Diego Union Tribune is reporting that local builder NASSCO, a General Dynamics subsidiary, has notified 900 of its 4,100 workers that they may be laid off by July. Half of roughly 500 subcontracting jobs at the yard are also at risk.
A final decision will be based on the amount of intervening repair work NASSCO is able to attract.
NASSCO still has two product tankers and five US Navy logistics vessels to deliver through 2014.
