The name of the Milgem-class comes from the Turkish words "milli' and "gemi", meaning national ship. The new vessels will have extensive stealth technologies on board.

The vessel has a length of 99 metres on a 14.4-metre beam, and can achieve a maximum speed of over 29 knots.

Part of Turkey's first indigenous shipbuilding project, F-511 'TCG Heybeliada' will be the first of twelve Milgem-class warships which comprises eight corvettes and four frigates.

'TCG Heybeliada' was launched on September 27, 2008 and will enter service in early 2011 following sea trials and testing of the weapon systems.
