No rational person can see any point in going to war except when your own nation or family is being attacked.
The problem with the world today, and throughout history, is that irrational people, in the form of megalomaniacs, keep being born.
Leaving aside wars of independence, recent history has seen massive wars that have caused widespread death and destruction that were started by megalomaniacs. The Napoleonic wars, World War I and World War II were all ignited by such people.
Given the inevitable tragic outcomes of such wars, you have to wonder what inspired Bonaparte, Kaiser Wilhelm, Hitler, Mussolini, Tojo, Hirohito and others. In each case their defeat was clearly predictable.
The author examines all the major wars since 1815 and very forcefully demonstrates that none of them resulted in anything other than complete disaster for their initiators. A simple truth but one that is rarely considered in the heat of the moment. Most "victories" are extremely hollow.
