From Baird Maritime:

The average reader may wonder why we would waste space reviewing a book on etiquette in a medium such as this.

Well, it's all to do with institutions and the social glue that binds them together. The US Navy is one such institution and its social glue, while constantly evolving, is as strong as Araldite.

That this strangely fascinating book has reached its fifth edition is sufficient evidence of both its popularity and necessity.

In a huge organisation such as a navy where personnel, including officers, now come from all over there is a need for social protocols and etiquette. Because of the diverse backgrounds, both familial and educational and even ethnic, some basis of civilised behaviour must be established.

It is no longer good enough to expect that a combination of common sense and osmosis from a "good" family background will suffice. It won't.

While we know we can expect good manners from US Naval personnel, it is a pity that the good manners described in this fine book will not be more widely promulgated.
