US Coast Guard commissions fast response cutter Earl Cunningham
The US Coast Guard commissioned the Sentinel-class fast response cutter (FRC) USCGC Earl Cunningham during a ceremony in Kodiak, Alaska, on Monday, August 11.
The vessel is the 59th FRC to be built by Bollinger Shipyards for the coast guard.
Final Royal Canadian Navy Arctic patrol ship formally named
The sixth and final Harry DeWolf-class arctic and offshore patrol ship (AOPS) for the Royal Canadian Navy was officially named HMCS Robert Hampton Gray in a ceremony at Halifax Shipyard on August 9.
The AOPS is 103.6 metres long with a beam of 19 metres and has a displacement of 6,615 tonnes. It is powered by a diesel-electric system and has a maximum speed of 17 knots. The vessel has a range of 6,800 nautical miles (12,594 kilometres) and is designed to operate in ice up to one metre thick. Armaments include one 25 mm cannon and two M2 Browning machine guns.
Brazilian Navy's second Tamandare-class frigate floated out
Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), via Brazilian subsidiary ThyssenKrupp Estaleiro Brasil Sul, has launched the second Tamandare-class frigate ordered by the Brazilian Navy.
The future Jeronimo de Albuquerque is being built by Águas Azuis, a consortium formed by TKMS and Brazilian companies Embraer Defense and Security and Atech. Once in service, the ship will be used for territorial defence and humanitarian missions.
Washington boatbuilder selected to supply new response boat to local fire department
The Bremerton Fire Department (BFD) in Washington State has placed an order for a new response boat to be built by Safe Boats International also located in Bremerton.
The new vessel will be a custom-built 33-foot (10-metre) full cabin fireboat equipped with a fire pump, mounted aft to meet ISO standards.
Turkish firm unveils new midget submarine design
Turkish defence technology company Datum recently unveiled a new design of midget submarine that can be operated in both shallow and deep waters.
Classified by Datum as a "deep diving wet and dry seabed warfare submarine," the nine-metre, 12-ton vessel will be used primarily for damaging undersea cables via a manipulator cutter as well as for minelaying.
