The United States Navy has received its first new Mk VI-series patrol boat from SAFE Boats International, reports BusinessWeek.

In July 2014, SAFE Boats International (SBI) was awarded a contract to provide the US Navy with four additional Mk VI-series patrol boats, with options for an additional two boats.

Intended to be the US Navy's next generation of patrol boat type, the vessels will become a part of the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command's (NECC) fleet of combatant craft.

The 25.9-metre Mk VI vessels are able to patrol shallow littoral areas beyond sheltered harbours and bays, as well as into less sheltered open water.

Designed to optimise performance, fuel economy and firepower whilst reducing overhead costs, the vessels are powered by twin diesel engines coupled to waterjets.

The vessel is also capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots fully loaded, with a range of 600 nautical miles.

SBI was awarded the initial contract for six Mk VI patrol boats in mid 2012.
