The date for the keel laying ceremony for the Russian Navy's next Yasen-class multipurpose submarine has been set for July 24, 2010.
This vessel will be the "first improved Project 855 submarine" to be built at the Sevmash Shipyard, using materials and parts made solely in Russia. The submarine will also have a new type of electronic warfare radio.
Meanwhile, the Headship of the class, the 'Severodvinsk' is expected to be commissioned before 2012. This submarine is similar to the US Navy's Virginia-class submarines.
In other news, Russia is about to start tests on the nuclear submarine, Project 9711, which will be leased to the Indian Navy.
According to the administration department of the Amur Shipyard, tests will be held from around November 15. The submarine will begin its commission with the Russian Navy before being leased to India.
