Russia's St Petersburg shipyard has finished the construction of its third ultra-modern submarine, the 'Stary Oskol'.

Intended to be one of the most formidable vessels in Russia's Black Sea Fleet, the new sub is armed with missiles with ranges of up to 2,500 kilometres.

The sub is also extremely quiet, with NATO describing the vessel class as a "black hole".

Representing Russia's third generation of submarine, the noise-dampened diesel-electric 'Stary Oskol' can dive to a depth of 300 metres and has an extended range of 45 days.

A total of six vessels within this new class have been ordered, with the debut vessel, 'Novorossiysk', completed and delivered last year. The 'Rostov-on-Don' then followed soon after.

St Petersburg shipyard will construct the three remaining subs. The cost of the vessel project has not been disclosed.
