One pirate has been killed in a brief shooting when an EU NAVFOR vessel ordered a suspected pirate skiff to stop.
Last Friday, September 7, EU NAVFOR German warship 'Brandenburg' located a suspected pirate skiff with a crew of five in the Gulf of Aden, south of Al Mukalla.
The German warship launched a helicopter which observed and filmed the skiff's leaders throwing ladders and weapons overboard.
Through an interpreter, the skiff was ordered to stop but it continued on at speed.
Warning shots were then fired across the bow, which finally brought the skiff to a halt. The German team then boarded the skiff and found more weaponry on board.
One of the five suspected pirates was wounded in the incident and although he received medical treatment on board 'Brandenburg', was later pronounced dead.
EU NAVFOR Operation Atalanta was launched on December 8, 2008, and will continue until December 2010.
