US DoD awards Thermo Fisher $94.5m contract for nuclear dosimetry systems

Published on:

The US Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded Thermo Fisher Scientific a five-year, $94.5 million contract to supply the US Navy with a next-generation radiation dosimetry system and updated data management software.

Under the contract, Thermo Fisher will supply its Navy Occupational Dosimetry System (NODS) devices and Navy Radiation Exposure Management System (NAVREMS) software.

The system is used to monitor and manage occupational radiation exposure for personnel working with nuclear-powered assets, in nuclear-capable shipyards, and at research and medical facilities.

The company stated that the advanced digital dosimetry devices, which are manufactured in Oakwood Village, Ohio, feature integrated beta, gamma, and neutron detection capabilities designed to deliver precise and reliable radiation exposure monitoring.

Rich McCartney, president of chemical analysis at Thermo Fisher, said the systems are purpose-built to provide precise monitoring in demanding environments and will help safeguard the health and safety of navy personnel.

The statement noted that the US Navy is the largest defense user of dosimetry systems globally.
