The Devon and Cornwall Police in the UK has awarded Isle of Wight-based boatbuilder Cheetah Marine Catamarans a contract for the construction of a new multi-role vessel capable of operating in coastal waters.

The £350,000 (US$440,000) bespoke catamaran will enhance the Devon and Cornwall Police Marine Unit's ability to respond to organised immigration crime from the water. Other duties will include marine patrols, diving operations, personnel transportation, and support for remotely operated underwater vehicles.

The boat can reach speeds of over 40 knots and sail more than 180 nautical miles. It will also have onboard space for specialist equipment in addition to seating for up to 10 crewmembers and other personnel.

The new police catamaran will measure at least 10 metres long and will be fully compliant with both Police Boat Code Category B and MCA Category 2 standards.

Cheetah Marine said the vessel will also boast excellent ride quality and protection from extreme conditions.
