Japanese yard to build offshore patrol vessel for Indonesian Maritime Security Agency

Published on:

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), via Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, has entered into an agreement with the Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Badan Keamanan Laut Republik Indonesia; BAKAMLA) for the construction of a new offshore patrol vessel (OPV).

The vessel will be built at MHI's Shimonoseki Shipyard and Machinery Works in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Completion and delivery are scheduled for March 2028.

The OPV project is being undertaken in fulfilment of a grant agreement concluded on March 22, 2024 between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the purpose of enhancing Indonesia's maritime safety and security.

The provision of an OPV through this agreement will improve the BAKAMLA's to conduct search and rescue (SAR) and maritime law enforcement missions quickly and effectively.

Upon completion, the OPV will have a length of 85.6 metres, space for 70 crewmembers, and a speed of 22 knots. The construction contract has a value of approximately JPY9 billion (US$58 million).
