South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and electronics company Daeyang Electric Industry have entered into a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the development of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) and associated technologies for export customers.
Under the MOA, the two companies aim to develop a differentiated model from existing unmanned submersibles through accumulated technology and the ability to develop modules to perform specific missions.
The partners hope to overcome some of the issues impacting UUV operations such as the limited selection of available roles including inspection and surveys.
The project between HHI and Daeyang Electric will lead to the development of unmanned submersibles to take on more demanding missions for operators in the defence and environmental monitoring sectors. These missions will include reconnaissance, mine detection and disposal, anti-submarine warfare, and collection of marine environmental data.
