US nuclear submarine makes first-ever port call in Iceland
The US Navy Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Newport News conducted a port visit in Iceland on July 9, which officials described as the first time a nuclear-powered submarine has pulled into port on the country's shores.
The navy said the visit is a significant step from 2023, when Iceland first welcomed a US nuclear-powered submarine into its waters without a port visit. Adm. Stuart B. Munsch, Commander of US Naval Forces Europe-Africa, stated that the visit underscores a commitment to collective defence and Arctic security.
Erin Sawyer, the Chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy in Iceland, added that the US and Iceland maintain a shared goal of, "low tension in the Arctic, with full awareness of Russia’s efforts to build its military presence in the region."
Cmdr. Eric McCay, the commanding officer of the Newport News, noted that in its 36-year history, the submarine has earned three Arctic Service Ribbons for service performed above the Arctic Circle.
Fast-attack submarines are described as multi-mission platforms capable of sea control, power projection, and maritime security.
