UK to build 12 new submarines from 2030 onwards

Published on:

The BBC has reported that the UK will build 12 new conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines as recommended in a major defence review to be presented by the UK Government on Monday, June 2.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the 12 new submarines would replace the seven Astute-class boats in the Royal Navy's current fleet beginning in the late 2030s.

Local newspaper The Telegraph meanwhile said the submarine construction program would result in a new boat being completed every 18 months.

The 12 new submarines will belong to the SSN-AUKUS class, which are being developed in collaboration with Australia. Examples of the class will be operated by both the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy beginning in the late 2030s and early 2040s, respectively.

The Royal Navy's SSN-AUKUS submarines will be operated alongside four Dreadnought-class ballistic missile boats, bringing the total number of submarines in UK service by then to 16.

UK Defence Secretary John Healey said the new submarines would also be deployed on patrols in international waters.
