SIMA Peru completes modernisation of Peruvian Navy submarine
Peruvian state-run shipyard SIMA Peru has completed a major modernisation of the submarine BAP Chipana and delivered the vessel back to the Peruvian Navy on June 11. The work was conducted at the company’s Callao Operations Center.
The Chipana is the first of four submarines scheduled to undergo this modernisation process. The work involved comprehensive maintenance and a transformation of the vessel's systems, which was carried out with guidance from Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). The stated goal was to, "provide the submarine with superior operational capabilities," and significantly extend its service life.
Prior to delivery, the submarine successfully completed a series of tests, including stability, watertightness, navigation, immersion, and weapons and communications systems trials.
SIMA Peru stated that the experience gained from the project strengthens the country's capability to undertake large-scale naval projects. It also expressed confidence that integrating the modernised submarine into the fleet enhances the Peruvian Navy’s deterrence and maritime surveillance capabilities.
