The Royal Navy commissioned its newest nuclear-powered attack submarine into service in a ceremony on Thursday, September 23.

HMS Audacious is the fourth submarine in the Astute-class, which were built by BAE Systems to replace the navy's 1980s-era Trafalgar-class boats.

Like its sisters, Audacious can carry both Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes. It is also capable of circumnavigating the globe while submerged, producing its own oxygen and drinking water.
