The US Navy has awarded a $537 million contract to NorthStar Maritime Dismantlement Services LLC for the full dismantling, recycling, and disposal of the ex-USS Enterprise (CVN 65).

Under the firm-fixed-price agreement, NorthStar will carry out the dismantlement at its facility in Mobile, Alabama. The work is expected to be completed by November 2029.

The contract covers the complete breakdown of the vessel, including the packaging and safe transport of hazardous materials, such as low-level radioactive waste for disposal at licensed sites.

The contract was competitively tendered via the "procurement integrated enterprise environment" platform, with three bids received. The Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, DC is overseeing the project.

The navy has obligated $534 million in fiscal year 2025 operations and maintenance funds at the time of award, which are set to expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

The Enterprise was the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and was decommissioned in 2017.
