Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and Saab Australia to collaborate on frigate platform

Published on

Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Saab Australia to explore potential collaboration on the MEKO A-200 frigate platform.

According to the companies, the MOU builds on an existing relationship and supports a shared focus on strengthening sovereign industrial capability in naval defence.

Saab’s Australian combat management system (AusCMS), which is currently deployed across the Royal Australian Navy’s surface fleet, is expected to form a key component of the collaboration. Saab stated that the system provides operational, training, and sustainment benefits while contributing to local defence capability.

Thyssenkrupp said the initiative aligns with its business model of supporting domestic shipbuilding and sustainment in partner countries. The company has previously delivered the ANZAC-class frigates to the Royal Australian Navy and worked on similar naval projects with 16 navies, including six NATO members.

Dr. Oliver Juckenhöfel, Executive Vice President of Operating Unit Surface Vessels at Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, said the MOU reflects the company’s approach to long-term naval partnerships and delivering proven platforms tailored to national requirements.

The companies said the MOU also supports potential future programmes, including SEA 3000.
