The decommissioned US Coast Guard cutter Sherman was formally welcomed into service with the Sri Lankan Navy in a ceremony held earlier this month.

The Hamilton-class high-endurance cutter will sail under the name SLNS Gajabahu under its new operators.

At 115 metres long, it is currently the largest ship in the Sri Lankan Navy.

Gajabahu is the second ex-US Coast Guard ship to join the Sri Lankan fleet after the medium endurance cutter ex-USCGC Courageous, which was commissioned as SLNS Samudura in 2005.
