Seventh Mogami-class destroyer Niyodo delivered to Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force

On May 2, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries delivered the destroyer Niyodo to the Japanese Ministry of Defense at the Nagasaki Shipyard and Machinery Works Nagasaki Plant.

Ordered in fiscal year 2021, Niyodo is the seventh ship in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's 3,900-ton Mogami class, following flagship Mogami, and Kumano, Noshiro, Mikuma, Yahagi and Agano.

Vessels in this class have a length of 133 metres, beam of 16.3 metres and depth of 9.0 metres.

Powered by a single gas turbine and two diesel engines, Mogami-class ships have a speed of approximately 30 knots.

Main weaponry comprises a five-inch 62 caliber gun, SeaRAM, a pair of SSM devices, an anti-submarine system, a mine countermeasure system and a vertical launch system.
