North Korea unveils new frigate under construction
North Korean state media has unveiled photographs of what the North Korean government claims is a warship capable of launching guided missiles.
Using the available photographs and news footage as their basis, international analysts have noted that the vessel is a frigate fitted with fixed-panel radars, a low-observable superstructure, and a vertical launch system (VLS) that can be used for cruise missiles and/or surface-to-air missiles (SAMs). Space will also likely be reserved for a deck-mounted naval gun.
The ship will be the first in the Korea People’s Army Navy (KPAN) to be fitted with a VLS for SAMs, as other KPAN warships utilise above-deck SAM launchers or man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS) such as the Russian-built 9K38 Igla.
Analysts also believe the new frigate is the largest warship ever to be built in North Korea. However, details of its specifications, capabilities and delivery timeline have not been made available other than a displacement of approximately 3,000 tonnes.
Construction of the frigate is ongoing at Nampo Shipyard in western North Korea.
