Gulf Island Fabrication has been awarded a contract for the construction of two additional Navajo-class towing, salvage, and rescue ships (T-ATS) for the US Navy.

The vessels will be the fourth and fifth of the 80- by 17-metre Navajo-class, which will be used to provide ocean-going tug, salvage, and rescue capabilities to support the navy's fleet operations.

The navy has remaining options for three additional T-ATS vessels.
