Israeli Navy missile strike targets Houthi power plant near Yemeni capital

Published on:

Israeli media reported that Israeli Navy ships successfully attacked a Houthi-operated power plant near Yemen's capital city of Sanaa on Sunday, August 17.

The types of vessels or the missiles used were not disclosed. However, the strikes are confirmed to have been conducted over a distance of just over 200 kilometres.

Houthi-affiliated media outlets said that Israel's "aggression" damaged a number of generators and ignited a fire at the plant in Sanhan district south of Sanaa, though the blaze was eventually contained by responding firefighters.

The Israel Defence Forces said in a statement that Sunday's strikes were carried out in direct response to the Houthis' recent missile and drone attacks targeting Israel.

The attack against the power plant and other Houthi-controlled sites within Yemen was, "just the beginning," Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a social media post.

Mr Katz also warned that the consequences would be, "severe and painful," for the Houthis if they opt to continue firing their weapons against Israel.
