Goa Shipyard has recently delivered the 105-metre 'INS Sumitra' to the Indian Navy.
The fourth vessel within the navy's Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel (NOPV) class, the 'INS Sumitra' was both designed and constructed in-house by Goa Shipyard. She was handed over to the navy in mid-July.
The Indian Navy's largest OPV to date, the vessel is fitted with a large number of locally built electronic, communication and weapon systems. According to the shipyard, the vessel will help meet the increasing requirements of the Indian Navy to undertake ocean surveillance and surface warfare operations.
Operations include infiltration prevention, border patrol, sea lane monitoring, and defence of offshore assets such as offshore platforms.
The vessel can also be deployed for escorting high-value ships, as well as support other operations and vessels within the navy's fleet.
