New emission-capture barge for LA headed to Shell Mormon Island Terminal

Published on:

Stax 5, the latest emission-capture barge from Stax Engineering, is undergoing final outfitting before heading to its new home at the Shell Mormon Island Terminal in Los Angeles.

Starting in 2025, Stax 5 will service the Shell Mormon Island Terminal to support compliance with the new California Air Resources Board (CARB) tanker emissions reduction regulations.

Under a five-year agreement with Shell, Stax will provide approximately 1,600 hours of emissions capture and control solution per year and is projected to treat more than 150 tons of emissions over the partnership’s lifetime.

Stax Engineering's fourth barge Stax 4 was also completed recently and will soon head to the Port of Benicia under an agreement with AMPORTS.

The Port of Benicia is an entry point for vessels carrying cars from Asia, Europe and Mexico and an export terminal for vessels bound for Asia. At the port, AMPORTS handles roughly 260,000 imported vehicles annually, about 20 per cent of the vehicles imported by sea into California.
