DCNS is unveiling its latest submarine, the SMX-Océan attack sub, at the Euronaval trade show.
According to the French defence group, the diesel-electric vessel draws on the design of an advanced nuclear-powered submarine, with considerable submerged endurance and deployment capabilities, especially for a conventional propulsion submarine.
The vessel has an endurance of up to three months, allowing it to cross the Atlantic up to six times without surfacing.
Its transit speed is up to 14 knots via a high-performance air-independent propulsion system utilising fuel cells.
Capable of a range of roles, the SMX-Océan features the same combat system, provisions for Special Forces' missions, masts, and general layout as the Barracuda SSN.
The submarine measures 100 metres in length and 15.5 metres in height, with an 8.8-metre beam, a 4,750-tonne surface displacement, a maximum diving depth of 350 metres, and a top speed of 20 knots.
