The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (ACBPS) marked the gifting of the border protection vessel (ACV) 'Corio Bay' to Sri Lanka in a flag transfer ceremony with the Sri Lankan Navy in Cairns.
The vessel has been subsequently renamed Republic of Sri Lanka Navy Ship 'Oshadi'.
"This ceremony represents the passing of responsibility, authority and accountability of command of the vessel from one Flag state to another," said ACBPS national director Nigel Perry.
"These vessels have served Australia well, continuing to be highly agile and responsive during operations, and will complement the Sri Lankan Navy's current fleet. During the course of its fourteen years as a Customs vessel, 'Corio Bay' completed 3,759 sea days and steamed 284,026 nautical miles. In 2008/09 alone, 349 sea days were conducted."
As part of the transfer process, ACBPS marine unit officers trained Sri Lankan Navy personnel in day-to-day operational aspects and ship's maintenance of managing a Bay Class vessel.
"The training was comprehensive. It included activities ranging from ship's deck work, familiarisation of electronic systems and equipment on board, to undertaking operational drills," Mr Perry said. "It was a highly successful 17-day training program, which allowed crews from both nations to exchange knowledge and experience of operating in the maritime environment."
