Thai commuters abandon ferries in droves for free skytrain ride

A Thai ferry operator has suffered a 70 percent drop in passenger numbers due to the newly opened extension of a skytrain across the Chao Phya River.

The BTS skytrain extension is currently a free service but the company will start collecting fares in mid August.

"Our passenger numbers have plunged by up to 70 percent since the BTS extension open on May 15," said Apisak Supapon, a ferry operator. "We used to serve 20,000 passengers per day, but now that's down to 7,000 to 8,000."

Mr Supapon said that Subthananakorn had been forced to drop its Dao Khanong-Sathorn service. He added that he hoped to see thousands of passengers switch back to the ferry when the skytrain's free trial period was over.
