Procurement process begins for two new Northern Isles Ro-Pax ferries

The Scottish Government has confirmed that procurement is under way for two new Ro-Pax ferries to operate on the Aberdeen–Kirkwall/Lerwick route, with a contract award targeted for February 2026.

Funding for the ferry replacements has been allocated in the 2025–26 budget. The new ferries will offer increased freight capacity, higher operating speeds, and the ability to accommodate up to 200 passengers during peak periods.

Caledonian Maritime Assets (CMAL) will lead the competitive tender process to replace the Helliar and Hildasay, which currently serve the route operated by Serco NorthLink.

Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop confirmed the launch of the procurement process during a response to a Parliamentary Question on June 4.

Hyslop said the move reflects the government’s commitment to improving lifeline ferry services and meeting the needs of Northern Isles communities.

"This marks an important step forward in strengthening the long-term resilience of the Northern Isles services," said CMAL Chief Executive Kevin Hobbs.
