New Scottish hybrid Ro-Pax ferry completes first sea trials

Published on

The first phase of sea trials for the hybrid Ro-Pax ferry Isle of Islay was successfully completed in the Sea of Marmara between May 22 and 30, according to a statement from Caledonian Maritime Assets (CMAL).

Personnel from CMAL and Caledonian Macbrayne (CalMac) were in attendance during the trials.

Initial testing involved the setup and verification of the propulsion systems, generators, thrusters, stabilisers, and associated electrical systems. These were assessed under the supervision of Lloyd’s Register and the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

The vessel underwent performance evaluations under full load conditions, including assessments of speed, stability, manoeuvrability, anchor handling, and endurance. Trials also covered the functionality of the propulsion plant, automation, and navigational systems.

"There is a great feeling of momentum following the successful completion of this first phase of sea trials,” said Jim Anderson, director of vessels at CMAL.

A second round of sea trials is scheduled for later this summer, following the installation of the vessel’s battery system and harbour acceptance tests of the hybrid system.
