Mexico's Baja Ferries inaugurates newly acquired vessel

Published on

Mexican transport company Baja Ferries recently acquired a Ro-Pax vessel for operation on the Gulf of California route between Mazatlan and La Paz.

The 193-metre Cabo Star is the former Eurocargo Savona, which was built in 2011 and had been operated by Italian shipping company the Grimaldi Group. The vessel was sold to Baja Ferries in 2024.

Cabo Star has space for up to 400 passengers and more than 3,000 lane metres for assorted vehicles. Like other ferries in the Baja Ferries fleet, it will be operated between mainland Mexico and the state of Baja California Sur.

Baja Ferries expects the vessel to be able to transport 250,000 passengers each year on the Mazatlan-La Paz route, which has an estimated one-way crossing time of 14 hours.

Baja California Sur Governor Víctor Castro said that Cabo Star is the largest vessel of its kind in Latin America and that it would provide, "a strategic leap for local commerce, not just for the port, but for the entire state."
