Individual charged for bomb scare on Norwegian ferry

Published on:

Police in Norway have filed charges against a local man in connection with a bomb scare that occurred on board a passenger ferry earlier this month.

The individual has been charged with making serious threats after he confessed to placing an alarm clock that has been configured to mimic the appearance of an improvised explosive device on board the Norled-owned Ro-Pax ferry Ryfylke.

The alarm clock was first noticed by another passenger on Ryfylke while it was off Nedstrand in Rogaland county on April 16. The passenger alerted the crew about what they initially believed to be a suspicious object in one of the onboard toilets, and the crew then informed the police.

Explosive ordnance disposal technicians boarded the ferry and determined that the suspicious object was merely an alarm clock and therefore carried no inherent risk.

The prime suspect in the case had initially been questioned as a witness. However, he was placed under arrest after he admitted to police that he had placed the alarm clock in the toilet.

The suspect said he expresses regret over his actions, which he claims were purely for getting attention.
