Florida's Jacksonville Transportation Authority to resume St Johns River Ferry service following accident

Published on:

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) in Florida reopened the St Johns River Ferry service on Friday, June 13, two weeks ahead of schedule.

The JTA said the closure followed an incident that occurred on the evening local time) of May 4, 2025, when the ferry made contact with the boarding ramp while departing from Mayport Landing.

The JTA said that, during this time, it also was able to work, "proactively and simultaneously," to complete most of the US Coast Guard-required maintenance that was scheduled to happen next year.

The authority expects this development would, "greatly reduce the amount of time needed for that scheduled maintenance."

JTA has been the operator of the St Johns River Ferry service since March 31, 2016. The service connects the north and south ends of Florida State Road A1A in Duval County, linking Mayport Village and Fort George Island.

The route is presently being served by the Ro-Pax ferry Jean Ribault.
