Ex-Fjord1 ferry to serve Canada's Nova Scotia-Prince Edward Island route
A Ro-Pax ferry formerly operated by Norwegian transport company Fjord1 will begin operating between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island in Canada later this year.
Northumberland is the former Fanafjord, which was originally built in 2007 for Fjord1 by Vard Brattvaag to a design by LMG Marin. The ferry was acquired by the Canadian federal government in 2023 as an interim replacement vessel for the Nova Scotia-PEI route after the ferry Holiday Island suffered extensive damage as a result of an engine room fire the previous year.
Northumberland arrived in Nova Scotia in late January 2025 after a five-week journey from Norway.
The ferry will undergo further refitting before commencing operational sailings to and from PEI under the banner of Northumberland Ferries. It will continue plying the route until 2028, when Holiday Island's intended successor finally enters service.
Northumberland was acquired for a cost of CA$38.6 million (US$26.2 million). The ferry measures 129 by 18 metres and can transport 590 passengers and up to 230 vehicles.
