The Pacific Fishery Management Council has voted to close the Pacific Coast Sardine Fishery until 2016 after they said they received scientific information that showed the sardine population was declining.

The 2015 stock assessment resulted in a population estimate of 97,000 tonnes, below the fishing cutoff, thereby triggering the Council action.

A NOAA representative said the decline was part of the natural cycle in the marine environment.
