The Organization for the Promotion of Responsible Tuna Fisheries (OPRT) has expressed concern over excessive tuna fishing capacities and called for the freezing of fishing capacity for tuna fishing vessels.
At its general meeting on June 2, the OPRT said in a statement that if such excessive catches persists, it would become difficult to continue tuna fishing on a stable basis, "causing all parties related to tuna fisheries to face unbearable hardships".
The organisation recognised the need to establish effective for smaller developing nations to benefit from tuna fisheries, but also called for more effective measures to restrain bycatches of immature tunas.
