Two Interislander ferry captains are understood to have been stood down by their company while investigations are completed into allegations of "serious incidents".
The suspensions follow a reported close quarters incident last May, involving the Picton-departing 'Kaitaki' and the 'Arahura' and a May 11 incident involving the Wellington-departing 'Arahura' with the cruise ship 'Dawn Princess' and tanker 'Citrus Express' in vicinity.
Interislander general manager Thomas Davis rebuked an assertion by New Zealand First MP Winston Peters that his organisation had moved to cover up the incidents.
"Investigations need to be undertaken to prove or disprove an allegation," said Mr Davis.
"The incidents Mr Peters' alleges have been subject to normal investigation protocols and a full safety investigation has begun, including the opportunity for all parties to share incident details to establish if further action is required.
"Our internal investigation team is examining these alleged incidents, including taking steps to ensure our staff are treated appropriately through the investigation process."
The suspensions were not expected to have an impact on the Interislander's timetables, given the quieter time of the season.
Maritime New Zealand senior communications and media advisor Steve Rendle says his organisation is awaiting the findings of the investigation by Interislander.
