Fire on Royal Caribbean cruise ship erupts in Mediterranean

Royal Caribbean's 'Splendour of the Seas' caught fire in the Mediterranean on October 23, in one of the vessel's engine rooms. Twenty people were treated for smoke inhalation, but were subsequently released. The ship was not damaged.

According to local reports, the fire started in one of the two engine rooms, sending smoke into cabins on some of the lower decks. Passengers complained the vessel smelled of burned plastic and rubber. The vessel's fire suppression system was activated, successfully containing and extinguishing the fire in the engine room.

The 264-metre long, 5,200DWT passenger cruise ship was traveling from Venice to Greece when the incident occurred. The scheduled port of call at Argostoli, Greece was skipped and the ship returned to Venice on October 24.
