VESSEL REVIEW | Xin Ming Zhu 30 – Fast commuter catamaran delivered to Hong Kong's Sun Ferry
Hong Kong-based ferry operator Sun Ferry has taken delivery of Xin Ming Zhu 30 (新明珠30; “New Pearl 30”), a new diesel-electric ferry.
Constructed by China's AFAI Southern Shipyard, the all-aluminium ferry will serve inter-island commuter and tourism operations across Hong Kong, connecting Peng Chau, Mui Wo, Chi Ma Wan and Cheung Chau.
Xin Ming Zhu 30 has an LOA of 34.73 metres (113.9 feet), a beam of 9.7 metres (32 feet), a draught of only 1.28 metres (4.2 feet), and a depth of 4.15 metres (13.6 feet).
Space is available for 300 passengers and three crewmembers.
Expanded capacity to permit both commuter and sightseeing trips
The vessel features a main deck with spacious seating for 171 passengers, dedicated areas for pets, and designated wheelchair spaces, while the upper deck provides seating for 129 passengers and access to panoramic views. Large windows and ergonomic seating allow passengers to enjoy uninterrupted views of the outside.
Ample luggage storage is integrated throughout, including a six-square-metre (65-square-foot) cargo area centrally positioned for convenience. Essential amenities meanwhile include two standard restrooms and one wheelchair-accessible restroom.
The aft main deck also features crew quarters with three bunk beds, lockers, and a pantry.
Propulsion arrangement optimised for reduced-emission sailings
Power is provided by four Volvo D16MG main engines that each produce 420 kW (560 hp) at 1,500 rpm and two RAMME electric motors that each produce 500 kW at 1,200 rpm. A selective catalytic reduction system will guarantee compliance with IMO Tier III NOx emissions standards.
The vessel boasts two Veth VL450si-CR 451kW azimuthing thrusters that provide enhanced manoeuvrability at operating speeds of 14 knots. The adoption of this technology makes the vessel suitable for berthing at piers on inter-island routes.
The vessel is also fitted with a three-seat wheelhouse and 72 PV panels providing 7.5 kW of onboard power. A lithium battery pack can meanwhile ensure that the necessary lighting and air conditioning in spaces such as the crew rest areas can run for up to 10 hours when the ferry is not connected to a quayside shore power station.
Tank capacities for fuel, freshwater and sullage are 4,800 litres (1,100 gallons), 1,000 litres (220 gallons) and 1,000 litres, respectively.
Construction of Xin Ming Zhu 30 was completed in compliance with China Classification Society rules and Hong Kong flag requirements.
