Tech startup to introduce solar-powered ferries on Singapore River
Singapore-based technology startup Pyxis will introduce a fleet of ten solar-powered electric commuter vessels into service on the Singapore River within this year.
The first two boats will enter service in April while the remaining eight will be handed over at a rate of one every other month. The long-term goal is to replace half of the fleet of 20 boats belonging to local operator WaterB.
Each boat will be fitted with PV panels that can generate up to 22 kWh in one day. The boats will be berthed during daytime to enable the PV panels to generate enough power for sustained nighttime sailings.
The ferries will also feature vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, which will enable them to supply any excess electricity to the local grid. When not in use sailing on the river during daytime, the boats can also function as solar farms that will supply electricity to end users along the waterfront.
