Nigeria's Lagos state to introduce electric ferries into service by Q3 2025
The State Government of Lagos in Nigeria has said that it will introduce a fleet of 70 electric ferries into service in the state's inland waterways by the third quarter of this year.
The move by the government was confirmed earlier this week Lagos Ferry Services Managing Director Abdoulbaq Ladi Balogun and Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) Managing Director Damilola Emmanuel.
Balogun and Emmanuel said the introduction of the ferries is part of a broader program that seeks to enhance vessel safety in the state's inland waterways.
The electric ferries will be introduced over a span of five years with assistance provided by the French Development Agency, the French Government body that provides financing for economic and social development projects overseas.
In addition to serving regular commuter routes, the electric ferries will also be used to facilitate tourist transport throughout Lagos.
In a related development, the Lagos State Government had approved the purchase of a separate fleet of water taxis, which will also enter service by Q3 2025.
