South Korean shipbuilding giant Samsung Heavy Industries is building a floating liquefaction storage offloading (FLSO) vessel for the US Gulf Coast, and an ultra deepwater drillship.

The FLSO will be built for Texas-based floating LNG firm Excelerate Energy, a company aiming to sign heads of agreement (HOAs) by mid-to-late November with selected partners for the US Gulf coast-based Port Lavaca floating LNG (FLNG) project.

The LNG specialist is to sign with two parties, which would each take two million tonnes per annum from Port Lavaca's first floating liquefaction storage offloading (FLSO) vessel.

Dredging and pipeline works are already underway at the site on the Texan Gulf coast.

Meanwhile, Norwegian semi-submersible oil rig operator Ocean Rig UDW has announced that it has signed a contract to construct a seventh generation ultra deepwater drillship at Samsung Heavy Industries.

This drillship is a sister ship to the three currently under construction at the Korean yard. The drillship is scheduled to be delivered in January 2015.
